The Basics of Teaching English as a Second Language to Young Children.
1. Young learners acquire vocabulary by repeatedly hearing spoken words in context with what they represent. Though Hearing & Seeing are considered the primary senses for providing the contextual meaning of words, Feeling, Tasting and Smelling also play essential roles. How else would you teach: Cold and Hot, Rough and Smooth or Sour and Sweet?
we start to assemble our newly acquired vocabulary in more complex ways. The process generally proceeds something like what follow:
Model: “It’s blue.” or “It’s orange .”
“Is it big or small? Answer: “Small”
Model: “It’s small.” or “It’s big.”
“What is it?” Answer: “Cat”
Model: “It’s a cat.” or “that’s an apple.”
“What letter is it?” Answer: “C”
Model: “Yes, It’s a C.” or “No, it’s an A”
Note: Don’t worry about explaining “a” vs “an” or if they get it right. You can try but don’t discourage the child’s engagement.
“How many are there?” Answer: “One” Model: “Yes, there is one.”
Answer: “Two” Model: “yes, There are two, like me and you, two”
Answer: “Three” Model: “Awesome, Yes: ) there are three. You Got it !”
Note: Don’t worry about explaining “is” vs “are” or if they get it right. You can try but don’t discourage the child’s engagement.

- We point to something and give it a name (ex. Mama, Papa, Milk, Ball, Blue, Cat, etc.)
How many times do we say Mama or Dada before our child repeats the word/name?
When they do say Mama or Papa we jump for joy and praise our child for their brilliance. - Repeating songs with visual signs or movements and re-reading books with pictures greatly helps children learn new vocabulary.
we start to assemble our newly acquired vocabulary in more complex ways. The process generally proceeds something like what follow:
- First we simply call things by their name. (ex. Mama, Dada, Cat, etc.)
- This is followed by pointing and or looking at a thing and repeating its name, which usually indicates that a child wants that thing. (Mama, Mama or Milk, Milk, Milk, etc.)
- Then a child often learns verbs like “want” and commanding words like “no”. The following word assemblies likely result: “Want milk”, “Milk no” or “No peas”
- This is the stage where most of are PreSchool students are. Thus we have been practicing getting them to ask and answer questions with the next level of grammatical structure.
- We may ask a student, “What color is it?” while pointing to something red. Most of our students will answer with the one word reply, “Red”. We will then reply, “Yes, it’s red.” We will also begin to gently encourage the student to answer using, “It’s red.”
- The principle is to inspire and praise language usage while modeling proper grammar. We do not criticize improper grammar usage but praise engagement and repeatedly encourage proper grammar through teacher modeling. NOTE: this grammar is not complex just try to follow the grammar patterns below.
Model: “It’s blue.” or “It’s orange .”
